The Long Silent Retreat

The gentle rhythm of Offices, Eucharist, and Meditation has made the Long Retreat one of DeKoven ‘s most anticipated offerings. Perhaps because of its length, Retreatants discover a Sabbath-like sense of leisure and space they have come to depend upon. DeKoven ‘s campus is in full June array, the surroundings are gracious, and physical comforts anticipated and provided.
But it is the silence and the slow passing of the days that creates a special charm. Time itself seems set into a larger framework. The spirit is at peace, the body at rest.
Our conductor this year is Father Wayne Fehr, a long-time friend of the Community of St. Mary, who has had many years experience leading Retreats and Quiet Days, a ministry for which his life has well prepared him. His own contemplative practice was formed as a Jesuit, within a centuries-long tradition of mysticism and the life of prayer. Fr. Fehr has a Doctorate of Religious Studies from Yale and taught theology for several years. He was ordained priest in 1979 and received into the Anglican Communion in l988. As rector of St. Thomas of Canterbury, Greendale WI, Fr. Fehr names pastoral care as his chief focus and concern. DeKoven is delighted to welcome him for this important Retreat.
The Long Retreat begins on Sunday afternoon at 5:00 with a gathering reception and ends Thursday morning after the Holy Eucharist and festive brunch. On the last morning Retreatants will make an offering to the Community of St. Mary. We are the Sisters‘ guests for this Retreat. Your generosity is appreciated.
