Bickel (1859\u20131941), a devout\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Presbyterian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Presbyterian<\/a>\u00a0Church\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elder_(Christianity)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">elder<\/a>\u00a0who worked in the wholesale hardware business.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fredric_March#cite_note-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0March attended the Winslow Elementary School (established in 1855),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Racine_High_School\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Racine High School<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Wisconsin%E2%80%93Madison\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Wisconsin\u2013Madison<\/a>,<sup>[<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Citation_needed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">citation needed<\/a><\/em>]<\/sup>\u00a0where he was a member of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alpha_Delta_Phi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alpha Delta Phi<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fredric_March#cite_note-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>March served in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Army\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States Army<\/a>&nbsp;during&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World War I<\/a>&nbsp;as an artillery lieutenant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He began a career as a banker, but an emergency&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Appendectomy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appendectomy<\/a>&nbsp;caused him to re-evaluate his life, and in 1920, he began working as an &#8220;extra&#8221; in movies made in New York City, using a shortened form of his mother&#8217;s maiden name.
