CREATIVE SPACE:
ARTISTS RETREATS AT THE DEKOVEN CENTER

Three times each year the DeKoven Center hosts "working" retreats for artists of all disciplines—painters, musicians, writers, stampers, poets and photographers to name a few.

The retreats begin with a noon meal on a Friday and end with the noon meal on a Sunday. Seventy percent of the weekend time is unscheduled for each artist to work at his or her own project, or a combined project with other artists on the retreat if so desired. The entire afternoon of Friday, the evening of Friday, and the morning and afternoon of Saturday are free times set aside for creative time—which is why the retreat is called "Creative Space."

Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings are set aside for individual artists to share with the other retreat participants their creative activity from the weekend.

Private rooms in which to work are made available for each participant as well as two pianos and two organs for musicians. The retreat fees include all meals, bedding and towels, a private room and free parking.

The retreat dates for the year 2005 are:
February 4-6
July 22-24
October 28-30

The participation fees are:
$175.00 for those who stay in Taylor Hall
$110.00 for those who choose to commute from a Racine area location
(staying at the center for the retreat is strongly recommended)

Some Examples of Work Done at Creative Space Retreats

Seasonal Tapestries, Betty Marquand

Hey Paul! (song lyrics)
by Mike Woods

Verse I:
Hey Paul!
Why do you bother at all, writin’ to the folks at Corinth?
They’re carrin’ on, and misbehavin’, do you really believe
that these folks are worth savin’?
How’s about we pick out the very best few,
Move down the road, and start anew.
We could start a brand new mission
Restate the fundamentals of our position
Get rid of all the lepers, and the unclean ones,
The losers, and the bums, and the prodigal sons.

Verse 2:
Hey Paul!
Why do you bother at all, writin’ to the folks at Rome?
Its their sinnin’ that keeps ‘em all a’grinnin’, you know
they’re feelin’ most at home.
So, how’s about we pick out the very best few,
Move down the road, and start anew.
We could hang out a brand new shingle
Pass around the plate, play a brand new jingle.
Sip a little wine, break some bread, and mingle
With the sinless and the spotless without even a wrinkle.

Verse 3:
Hey Paul!
Well why, oh why, do you bother writin’ to Phillipi?
Those people are all blind. They are not of one mind.
They certainly could never be one of our kind.
So, how’s about we pick out the very best few,
Move down the road, and start anew.
We could write a brand new gospel,
Find us a more agreeable apostle,
We could even rewrite the golden rule,
And exclude the disgraceful underhanded fools.

Hey Paul!
Why do you bother at all, writin’ to folks like me?
I ain’t no better than the folks in the letter.
Well any plain fool can see.
So how’s about you stick it out
With who you got.
I know we ain’t much
But we love a lot.
Hey Paul!
